Membership to the Handicraft Club
Members are the heart of the Handicraft Club, and we welcome new members to join us who are skilled in their crafts as well as novices who are just passionate to learn and explore. We celebrate the output of our arts and crafts as much as the joy and camaraderie we experience as we create together. And we believe the wide ranging interests, skill levels and backgrounds of our membership enrich the experience for all of us.
Membership Types and Application Processes
Active Membership
Benefits:
Active Members enjoy full membership benefits, including the opportunity to enroll in an unlimited number of classes, workshops and lectures throughout three class terms (Fall, Winter, Spring) each year. Members receive priority for class enrollment and can also attend a variety of social events throughout the year.
With dozens of different classes and workshops offered every year taught by seasoned and expert instructors, there are opportunities for members to hone a craft they already love or try something totally new—and meet old and new friends along the way.
How to join:
If you know a member of the Handicraft Club today, ask her to consider sponsoring you for Active membership. As part of this process, she will complete a Membership Application with your input, and write a short letter proposing you to our Membership Committee. She can help secure another Handicraft member to write a letter to second your proposal.
If you do not know a member at the Club yet, reach out to our Membership Chairs and we can help facilitate the proposal process.
These three parts of the application process should be emailed to us or mailed to The Handicraft Club; c/o Membership; 42 College Street, Providence, RI 02903.
We operate on a rolling admission basis, so when we receive a completed application, our Membership Committee presents candidate names to our Board and posts them for member review for 14 days. Following this period, our Board votes on new members, generally at our next scheduled Board meeting.

Costs:
- Initiation fee is $500
- Annual dues are $300 (with a rolling admission policy, we would prorate dues depending on when you join during the Club year)
- Regular class / workshop fees, which range in cost depending on length of each program (generally ~$25-$160)
Guest Memberships
We warmly welcome guests to attend Club programs, and we offer two ways for them to participate:
Guest with Provisional Status (“GPS”)
Benefits:
- Enroll in an unlimited number of classes, workshops and other Club programs in each of three terms over a consecutive 12-month period. This gives guests the best opportunity to try a variety of types of classes and media and get to know more of our members.
- Enjoy the same enrollment priority as Active members
How to join:
- Interested individuals need to complete a short application. It is not necessary to know a member to become a GPS.
- GPS membership lasts 12 consecutive months and cannot be renewed. GPS members are not eligible to vote.
- GPS members generally apply for Active membership as their first year is ending (or sooner if they wish).
Cost:
- $300, plus costs for classes or workshops. This non-refundable fee reduces the initiation fee that GPS members would pay if they decide to become Active members. As such, GPS members pay $200 upon initiation. Their first year member dues (currently $300) would be prorated for the balance of the Club Year depending on when they become Active.
Guests
Benefits:
- Enroll in one class or workshop during the course of a Club Year.
- Interested individuals complete a short application. It is not necessary to know a member to be a Guest.
- $25, plus costs for their chosen class or workshop.
