Please include the following when submitting a new application for Active membership.
Send them via email to generalmanager@handicraftclub.org OR send them via hard copy to 42 College Street, Providence, RI 02903.
- Proposer’s letter of recommendation
- Seconder’s letter of support
- Membership Application (which you, as the Proposer fill out with your candidate’s input)
Please also take the following steps to help your candidate have a great first experience:
Explain the nomination process and set expectations about timing (generally 4-5 weeks):
- Application and all supporting letters are submitted to the Club
- Candidate names are submitted to the Board and they are posted them within the Club for 14 days
- At the end of the 14-day period, candidates are voted upon at the next Board meeting (generally monthly)
- Upon acceptance, new members pay fees (see below) and become eligible to enroll in classes and workshop and attend events.
Explain fees, which must be paid within 30 days of Acceptance letter.
- Initiation Fee: $500
- Annual Dues: $300 (Prorated based on when the application is processed.)
And don't forget these important steps:
- Introduce your candidate to at least two members of the Executive Board or Committee Chairs.
- Invite your candidate to a tour of the Club when classes are in session.
- Share the latest course catalog and explain that we expect members to enroll in a class or workshop within their first year and that sometimes there are waitlists.
- Let your candidate know about volunteer opportunities at the Club, e.g., helping with our Open House, joining a Committee, and more.
- Most importantly, stay in touch with your candidate. Make her feel welcome and comfortable as she settles into signing up for classes, visiting the Club, ordering lunch, and attending events.
Guest Memberships
We warmly welcome guests to attend Club programs, and we offer two ways for them to participate:
Guest with Provisional Status (“GPS”)
Benefits:
- Enroll in an unlimited number of classes, workshops and other Club programs in each of three terms over a consecutive 12-month period. This gives guests the best opportunity to try a variety of types of classes and media and get to know more of our members.
- Enjoy the same enrollment priority as Active members
- Interested individuals need to complete a short GPS application. It is not necessary to know a member to become a GPS.
- GPS membership lasts 12 consecutive months and cannot be renewed. GPS members are not eligible to vote.
- GPS members generally apply for Active membership as their first year is ending (or sooner if they wish).
- $300, plus costs for classes or workshops. This non-refundable fee reduces the initiation fee that GPS members would pay if they decide to become Active members. As such, GPS members pay $200 upon initiation.
- Their first year member dues (currently $300) would be prorated for the balance of the Club Year depending on when they become Active.
Guest
Benefits:
- Enroll in one class or workshop during the course of a Club Year.
- Interested individuals complete a short application. It is not necessary to know a member to be a Guest, however, guests may enroll only if there is space available.
- $25, plus costs for their chosen class or workshop.
- Guests who then apply for Active membership pay an initiation fee (currently $500) and their first year dues (currently $300) would be prorated for the balance of the Club Year depending on when they become Active members.
